About the RETAIL skills academy

The RETAIL skills academy was established by City College Norwich for the benefit of:

  • retail businesses
  • retail employees and those planning to join the sector
  • local and visiting consumers
  • the local economy

What we do

The RETAIL skills academy improves the performance of individuals and businesses by developing retail skills and knowledge.  Its services are designed specifically for the sector, addressing skills needs created by the changing retail environment and consumer demands.  Training is delivered only by people with experience, expertise and success in the sector.

It offers training, qualifications, work experience, employment opportunities and business improvement services.

Where to find us

The RETAIL skills academy is based among retailers in Chapelfield Shopping Centre in the centre of Norwich.  It comprises three elements:

  • A training suite designed and equipped for retail learning and development (opening Autumn 2011)
  • An outlet providing information and advice about retail training, qualifications and business services
  • ego, Norwich's Buy & Sell Fashion Boutique, where aspiring and existing retailers learn, develop and showcase their retail skills

What is retail?

There are many definitions of retail but researchers will generally agree that it is the point at which manufacturing meets the consumer, or is the journey between production and consumption.  Retail does not include the journey between manufacturer and wholesaler or another from one business to another.

Several industries make products and sell them to consumers, such as restaurants or financial services, and so pure retail is also defined by the type of outlet which goods are sold, or resold, from.
